PTE Academic is a computer-based English test. You take it at an authorised test centre, on a computer, in one sitting. There is no at-home version of PTE Academic.
The test has three parts, all in the same sitting: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. Many tasks are integrated, so the test checks how you use English together, not one skill in isolation.

How PTE Academic is scored

PTE Academic is scored by a sophisticated AI system, trained by experts and refined using large amounts of test data. Simple items, like multiple-choice questions, are marked right or wrong. More complex items, like essays and long spoken answers, are scored against a mix of criteria.

- Speak clearly and steadily. The AI scoring rewards clear pronunciation and a steady pace more than a fancy accent. Record yourself and listen back often.
- Practise summarising. Several tasks ask you to summarise a text or a talk in one or two sentences. Practise catching the main idea fast, in both reading and listening.
- Write under time pressure. Practise typing organised answers quickly: one clear point, in order, with a short introduction and conclusion.
- Build a strong, active vocabulary. A wider vocabulary helps you read faster, understand audio the first time, and write and speak more precisely.
- Get comfortable with the test-centre format. Since PTE Academic is only taken at a test centre on a computer, do timed practice on a keyboard and with a microphone so the format feels normal.
- Get honest feedback on your weak skill. A general sense of "I need to improve" is not enough — you need to know exactly which skill, and which habit, is costing you points.
