Why tables are harder than they look
A graph is an argument that has already been made. Somebody chose the axes, and the picture that results tells you what matters: the peak is visibly the peak, the gap is visibly a gap.
A table has none of that. It is the data before anybody decided what was interesting about it. So the job the chart normally does — finding the shape — is transferred to you, and it has to be done before you write your first sentence.
Reading a table out loud is the single most common failure in Task 1, and it is not a language problem. The English in that answer is fine. Nothing was selected.
Decide which axis carries the story
A table has two directions, and they tell two different stories. Before writing, spend thirty seconds deciding which one you are going to organise around.

Usually one of the two is obviously more interesting. If the columns are years and the numbers move a lot, the story is change, and you read across. If the columns are years but the numbers barely move while the rows differ enormously, the story is comparison, and you read down.
Both stories are true. Only one of them makes a good essay, and choosing it is the thinking the table is testing.
A thirty-second scan that produces the overview
You do not need to understand every number. You need four things, and you can get all of them without writing anything down:
- The biggest number in the table, and the smallest. Where are they? That is almost always in the overview.
- Which row (or column) is highest overall, and which is lowest.
- The direction of travel, if there is time in the table: is nearly everything rising, nearly everything falling, or is it mixed?
- The exception. The row that does the opposite of the others, or the cell that does not fit its row. Find it — it is the most valuable sentence you will write.
From that scan, the overview writes itself: Overall, spending rose in every country over the period, with the United States remaining the highest throughout and Japan the lowest — although Germany was the exception, showing a small decline after 2015.
No figures in it. It covers the whole table. It has the exception in it.
Selecting: most of the numbers do not go in
A table with 6 rows and 5 columns has 30 numbers. A Task 1 answer is 150–190 words. There is no version of that essay which contains 30 figures — and an examiner is not checking whether you copied them all.
Include a number only when it is evidence for a claim you are making. The claim comes first; the figure supports it.

The right-hand column uses fewer numbers and says more. Notice that each of those sentences makes a statement that could be wrong — which is precisely why it is worth marks. A sentence that cannot be wrong is usually not saying anything.
The structure
- Paraphrase the title. One sentence, not copied.
- Overview. Highest, lowest, overall direction, and the exception. No figures.
- Body 1. The dominant group — the highest rows, or the earliest period, depending on the axis you chose.
- Body 2. The rest, plus the exception, in detail.
If the table has both a time dimension and a category dimension — which is common — you can still only organise by one of them. Pick the one that carries the story, and use the other inside the sentences: Across all three years, the northern regions consistently outperformed the southern ones, though the gap narrowed steadily. That single sentence uses both axes and stays organised.
And, as with every Task 1: no conclusion, no opinion, and no speculation about why. The table shows what happened. Why it happened is not on the page and not part of the task.
How to practise the skill this actually needs
The bottleneck is not English. Candidates who write a decent line-graph answer often collapse on a table, using the same vocabulary — which means the missing skill is reading data, not describing it.
- Take any table and say one sentence about it out loud — no writing. What is the single most interesting thing here? Do this ten times and the thirty-second scan becomes automatic.
- Practise finding the exception. Look for the number that does not fit its row. That is the habit that separates an answer that selects from an answer that transcribes.
- Force yourself to use no more than six figures. Artificial, and it breaks the transcribing habit faster than anything else, because six figures can only be spent on claims.

How do I write an overview for an IELTS table?
Scan for four things before writing: the biggest and smallest numbers, which row or column is highest and lowest overall, the general direction of travel if the table covers time, and — most valuable — the exception, the row that does the opposite of the others. An overview built from those covers the whole table and contains no figures, which is exactly what it should be.
Should I describe a table by rows or by columns?
Decide before you write, because it determines your paragraphing. Reading across the rows tells the story of how one thing changed; reading down the columns tells the story of how things compared in a given year or place. Both are true of the same table, but only one makes a good essay — usually the direction in which the numbers actually move or differ the most.
Do I need to include every number from the table?
No. A table with six rows and five columns has thirty numbers and your answer is about 150 to 190 words, so most of them cannot go in — and nobody is checking that you copied them all. Include a figure only as evidence for a claim you are making. The claim comes first; the number supports it.
Why did my table answer score badly when all my figures were correct?
Because accuracy is not what is being marked. An answer that reports every number in order has no overview, no organisation and makes no claim, which damages three criteria at once — and the English in it is usually fine. What is missing is selection: deciding what the table shows and saying that, using figures only as support.
What is the most valuable sentence in a table answer?
The one about the exception — the row that falls while the rest rise, or the cell that does not fit its row. The descriptors reward selecting and highlighting key features, and noticing an exception is direct evidence that you read the table rather than transcribed it. It is the cheapest way to demonstrate exactly what the criterion is asking for.
