The rule
You get a band for each of the four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Your overall band is the average of those four, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
The rounding works like this:
- An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band.
- An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
- Anything below those thresholds rounds down.

The part that matters: you may be on a boundary
Because the average of four numbers moves in steps of 0.125, most candidates land close to a rounding boundary without knowing it. And half a band in a single skill changes the average by 0.125 — which is often exactly enough.

Rows one and two are the case worth understanding. Half a band in one skill flipped the overall from 6.5 to 7.0 — while in rows three and four, the same effort moved nothing, because that candidate was not sitting on a boundary.
Which half-band is cheapest
All four skills count equally toward the average, so a half-band is worth the same wherever you get it. They are not equally easy to get.

The common mistake is to pour everything into Writing because it is the lowest number. If your Reading is a 6.5 because you ran out of time, that is a faster half-band — and the average does not care which skill it came from.
Beware the minimum-per-skill requirement
One thing can undo all of the above. Many universities and visa routes set a minimum in each skill, not just an overall.
A requirement of "overall 7.0 with no band below 6.5" means your 6.0 in Writing fails you even if your overall is 7.0. In that case the arithmetic above is irrelevant, and Writing is the only thing that matters.
Check the exact wording of your requirement before you plan anything. "Overall 7" and "7 with nothing below 6.5" are completely different targets and demand completely different study plans.
One Skill Retake
IELTS offers a One Skill Retake — the option to re-sit a single skill rather than the whole test — though availability depends on where and how you took the test.
Combined with the arithmetic above, this is worth knowing about: if you are one half-band away in one skill, retaking that skill alone may be far cheaper and faster than repeating the whole exam. Check whether it is offered for your test centre and whether the institution you are applying to accepts it, because not all do.
